Many teachings of Islam are in conflict with the American way of life. With that said, most strict literal interpretations of religions, from Christianity to Judaism, would not gel well with American laws or our culture.

Fortunately most people can maintain a dual lifestyle, in essence professing a belief system, but only following that belief system in so far that it does not contravene any of our laws. Most American Muslims follow in like manner, because most of them came here for material and social betterment anyway. If they were so hell bent on a literal verbatim interpretation and application of Islam, they would have stayed in Muslim theocratic nations, like Saudi Arabia.

There is only a small minority here that attempts to be that fanatical. We should not dismiss these fanatics but be vigilant of them because they could easily hold sway over the Muslim population in times of turmoil. Lets keep the fringe radical movement on the fringe, and embrace those Muslims who wish to integrate into western society.

As a muslim who lives here I would say no more than a devote christian or jew. The vast majority muslims worldwide believe in religious freedom, womens rights, and human rights. Unfortunately, as i have stated on this site numerous times the radicals are more vocal not the majority in every group of people including Islam. I personally believe that not only is Islam not conflicting with my American way of life it complements my beliefs. I dont think I am the minority either. The Islam is the fastest growing religion in this country and that is not all becuase of immigration or offspring but there are a considerable number of converts to the religion.

well, sometimes it is. For instance dating is prohibited in islam, but it is widely (and encouraged) in America. Plus eating pork, Its hard to find a place to eat without cross contamination of pork onto your food. Cant go to places like the Olive garden or red Lobster unless it halal ( and when will that ever happen). Its more hard for a teenager than for an older adult, because they are constantly in peer pressure.

Well you can't kill the infidels in America...so I guess that means for the Muslims there is no freedom of religion.
