It just doesn't look or sound right and actually makes me laugh at them!

i don't know either but they sound ridiculous... and completely uneducated... if one ever walks into my office for an interview they won't last 2 minutes.

they seem to think it's cool and it makes them a bad ***... but to everyone else they sound like idiots.

God I hate that. They may think it is cool, but they do not know how stupid they sound. I have seen grown women who are married to puerto ricans and have a fake spanish accent. Why? Good question. I am not mocking black accents or eubonics, or the spanish accent, but if you are white, raised by white parents then act it. There is a place for everything in each culture, respect the culture, do not mock it by trying to mimic it, you only make yourself look ignorant and stupid.

I get your drift, but, as a black person who doesn't speak with a "black accent", as you call it, I just want to remind you to please not put every black person in the black accent box.

Getting back to the white youths though, I find it amusing when some seem to be trying very hard to 'sound black'. It makes me think they are either trying to be cool or they're going through an identity crisis.

I know what you mean. It's really preposterous. In the Netherlands I see the same. Dutch youths taking over the accent of Moroccan immigrants. Somehow they seem to think it's cool to speak their own language incorrectly. Guess that's just some kind of puberty thing...

People learn the language that they are exposed to, regardless of their race; if a child grows up in an area with African American Vernacular English is spoken, he or she will end up speaking it, too. Some people may also consciously modify their own speech to conform to another standard--so a white kid who loves rap music might try to speak AAVE, just like a black person might try to speak Standard English (as defined by whites) when standing in court before a white judge and jury.

In their social settings, they are just trying to morph into whatever personality they think works at the time. To themse;ves, they think they are cool. When they are alone with their moms and dads, I bet they don't sound like that at all!!! These are people who think they have to act a certain way to gain acceptance. It will pass. You are right, it is so very phoney.

Couple reasons:

1) They fake it from what they see in t.v. because they think it's cool.

2) They grew up in a black neighbourhood and have mostly black friends, like Eminem, for example.
