Firstly, it is understood that a transformer is an ac device. There is no need to specify that the transformer is an ac to ac.
You can obviously lower the voltage provided that you can alter the turn ratio for a fixed input or else there is nothing you can do.

To convert ac to dc, you need a rectifier. However, it is usually not enough. You need to smooth out the rectified waveform using a passive filter to get a nice dc voltage waveform.

A transformer transforms, or changes voltage, either up or down; so you can use a transformer to lower the AC voltage going in.

To change an AC current to DC, you need a rectifier, not a transformer. This can be achieved using diodes to turn the AC current coming out of the transformer into a DC current.

No. AC is different. It has to be rectified and sometimes filtered, depending on what you want to do with it. Some devices can accept varying voltages, some can't.
Ac changes direction 50-60 times a second depending on the country. Ac was developed to make transformers possible. Dc is steady voltage and can be lowered with resistors, transistors. but cannot be increased without an inverter (complicated).
Ac can be changed to dc with a rectifier (a one way valve that only lets the electricity flow one way)

depending on what use.there are circuits compatible with dc which is "hot ground".but most ac to dc x'formers have secondary windings intended for the dc or "direct current" use.(",)
