Upper Street in Islington, N1 has lots of excellent European/modern British restaurants including 'Fig & Olive', Carluccio's, Almeida (in Almeida Street), Ottolenghi and Frederick's.
It also has some excellent gastro-pubs including the House on Canonbury Road, and the Marquess (both in N1).
Further south, Fish Central on Central Street EC1 is a fab fish restaurant.
Newington Church Street in Stoke Newington N16 is great for veggie restaurants.

I don't know whether Gt Portland Street falls within your orbit, but the Queens Head and Artichoke, a gastropub opposite the Melia White House Hotel, does excellent food, that I try to emulate in my own kitchen.

Try 'Yum Yums' in Stoke Newington!! Great Thai food, decor and atmosphere, one of my local favourites. Failing that Church Street (Stoke Newington) has loads of choice.
