I mean what if they really did see god and we discount it because they are high? loads of ancient religions have used all sorts of bizzare and painful ways to achieve effects we can fairly easily with a few synthesised chemicals. Why not? (im guessing i will have a few anti drug bible bashing types having a go at me but what the hell... no pun intended... har har)

The shamans use peyote and mescaline as an incentive for those who are slow to take up spiritual life within their social group, they consider this to be beneficial, by allowing individuals to view different dimensions of subtle reality through this process in a controlled and safe environment.
It is a process that has been used for many thousands of years in different cultures, however the natural steady path to self realisation and God realisation is available to anyone who sincerely follows the revealed sastra (scripture) and instructions from the bona fide spiritual master.
Therefore the use of hallucinogenic drugs cannot and should not be recommended, it is a practise that is unnecessary.
The problem with hallucinogenics is the individual is rocketed up to an advanced platform temporarily, so there is the aftermath of falling back down, where as the natural way, although more arduous is a steady advancement, similar to the sun rising up over the horizon, the sun of enlightenment increases daily to the point that any individual, who follows the correct process of sadhana (daily practise) is able to perceive spiritual reality, without coming down.

You have a point, a good one. All religion encouraged drug use so their followers get the message and see the right vision. But the control freakery of the new age brought the Puritans with their squeaky clean style of management. It is not surprising that no one sees decent visions anymore. Thats why I don't go to church too. Its boring when the angels or whatever don't rattle the foundations, get me?

I know what you mean, but not all the ancient religions use bizarre or painful ways, there are loads of plants which can give you a high and/or cause hallucinations, mushrooms are an example but thats the tip of the iceberg.
I think some of the religions nuts would do well on something like this..........although I wouldn't want to be too close!
Best wishes.

If you would use a drug to to have a religious experience would it really be a religious experience or just the drugs messing with your brain? When it comes to Christianity drugs are not used mainly because we believe that are bodies are the temple of God and we shouldn't purposely use anything that would defile it.For example drugs or alcohol. I can't say what other religions believe maybe they use drugs or not. I know that with hallucinogens that anything can talk to you when your on them. You may have a conversation with your fridg and think it's perfectly normal. I personally prefer to have religious experiences without any help from drugs. I may not have the earth shake or any other bizarre happenings but that's fine with me.

what does trashing your bodies with air, water etc have to do with hallucinogenics??? If you can stay away from drugs then dont add to anything that may already harm us then good. We live longer than centuries before so what is your point of that? I am not a bible basher but one who takes care of the temple and that is our body too.---har har Dont need drugs when you have Jesus. If the ancient religions used them more power to them, it doesnt mean that they didnt really see God.

Many of today's religions don't really need the drugs anymore. Have you ever seen someone "caught up in the spirit?" It's bizzare! In these instances the person is so psychologically worked up that they actually believe that something is happening to them. Proof that religious experiences can be self induced.

One word:
AYAHUASCA
There are some minor religions based on this "drug". It's a powerful hallucinogen which I hope to try sometime within the next couple of years.
The best way to get a grip on reality is to see what it's like when it becomes "distorted" (or different).
Just my opinion though.

It's a surefire way to put one in an altered state of consciousness. I personally do not recommend quick and easy
routes to spiritual attainment, like drugs or magic. They
are crutches. and like steroids, when you really need them,
you'll only blow up.
All you need to do is draw a dot on a piece of paper. Focus
your eyes on it. Don't strain, blink naturally. And after a while,
you will start seeing auras around everything. There is spirit
and life in everything.
You will also want to use your minds eye, like you see
pictures in your mind. To imagine a light of protection around
yourself. Call on your Highest Power for protection. You will
need that added spiritual protection once you open yourself up
to spiritual things.
There is nothing to fear, but fear itself. And fear is the enemy.
"The FEARFUL and UNBELIEVING will have their part in the
Lake of Fire."
Our Highest Power is opening our minds right now. Stand up
and be COUNTED!

Cause religion ultimately isn't about getting high and seeing transcendent truth; it's about learning to be a decent person who acts wisely and lovingly. And for that, clear and sober thought and feeling are necessary.

If you could only see god in an altered state then don't you think that'd be a bit of a design fault with the human body/mind. I mean, all drugs have risks so can it really be true that whichever 'god' would want his people to risk their lives just to connect with him - seems a bit inconsistent and well, daft to me.
