Our church has had a church wide yard sale and they also had an ice cream social where everyone in the church was invited and a special collection was taken.
Another fun idea is to have an auction. People in the church can donate items, also you might be able to get local businesses to donate a few items. eg - a local restaurant can donate dinner for two, a men's clothing store could donate a tie and a 20% discount card, a tanning salon could donate a free tan, a salon a free haircut. It's good advertising for the business and fund money for you!
Have fun!

our youth group runs a fireworks booth every year, the income is generally pretty good. we also last year held a massive garage sale, where all the items were donated and all the proceeds went to our mission trip; we also had a crab-feast that was held in house so that we didn't have to rent a place out and all we had to pay for was the crab and salad (make sure this one will work with your church, though; we didn't make a whole lot off of ours because all the people that came to it ate only crab, and lots of it; but another church here did the same thing, and they were actually selling bags of extra crab afterwards, and they bought less crab per person than we did.)

the kids can make things like...bookmarks...1. buy package of wooden sticks (like popsicle sticks)... 2. have children paint them with craft paint or 3. they can cut out quotations from the Bible (youth group..i am assuming christian) and glue onto the bookmarks 4. apply Modge Podge over the cutouts and let dry...sell them for a dollar or 2....kids love to do this because it is fast and creative...and just about everyone reads...
another idea is magnets...you can go to any Home Depot and buy a small sheet of small ceramic tiles like for a bathroom/kitchen...( i think they are 2 by 2)...again....they can put stickers or cut out quotations...even some inexpensive calendars with small pics are excellent for cut outs...and...they have all kinds...animals...spiritual...trees...glue onto tiles....apply one coat of modge podge...glue a magnet on back and there you go.....
i am a craft person and do fairs....and i sell alot of these....people like to buy something that doesn't cost too much....and like the bookmarks....just about everyone has a refridge....good luck
