Mount Gambier is a city of 32,000 people 2006 which is after Adelaide, in South Australia approximately four and half hours drive from both Adelaide and Melbourne. It is located upon the slopes of an extinct maar volcano.

The peak of a mountain inhabited by the Buandig people(aboriginal inhabitants) was sighted in 1800 by Lieutenant James Grant from the survey brig, HMS Lady Nelson, and named for Lord James Gambier, Admiral of the Fleet. Thus such place became Mt. Gambier which later became a city on 9 December 1954, when it was officially declared a city on the assent of the Governor of South Australia. The city has an area of 26.7 km².

The maar volcano where it lies upon has several craters. One of these craters contains a vast lake of pure artesian drinking water which changes with the seasons from winter grey to a shimmering azure blue, giving rise to its name the Blue Lake who was first discovered by the Henty brothers who owned large holdings in Portland, Western Victoria.

The town's major industries are forestry, trucking and tourism

Mount Gambier is located somewhere in the depths of the hell hole which is otherwise known as South Australia. Like the rest of South Australia it is probably best avoided, unless of course you wish to marry a relative. I might suggest then that you honeymoon in Tasmania afterwards.
