i've wondered about this too, and i don't think it's an "of course they are, you idiot!" thing. it seems as though they should be leaving it all to chance... but i don't know that they do. it definitely deserves further research, and people on yahoo answers don't necessarily know what they're talking about.
good question!

They are not rigged. The only question is what is the payout percentage. Clearly the lower the percentage the worse the machines pay. It is entirely possible that these percentages vary from time to time. But I don't think they would have any advantage of rigging the machines in the way you suggest. Remember that most legitimate on line casinos are regulated by the gaming board of the country they are in. Just because they are not in America doesn't mean that they are all run by a bunch of thieves.
The whole situation would be a awful lot better if these idiot politicians would legalize, tax and regulate the online gaming industry. Then the big Vegas names would launch online sites and there would be no question of them being rigged, nor any suspicion.

I dont think its rigged, BUT different casinos definitely have different pecentages of payout. I believe that as long as a casino is paying above the minimum payout percentage they can change each machines payout rate, which tends to support your argument. Of course the truth is that your result on any one line is predetermined even before you push the button or spin the reels. Thats how the mathematical algoorithm driving the slot machine works. Even though the odds are against me, I still enjoy the infernal machines.

i spend most of my life in the casino and have seen everything imaginable - what You are seeing is what You are seeing, however, payouts are not regulated by a central computer. some slots work in conjunction with others but most are individual. each slot (or system of slots) has a set amount of payouts it will pay over millions of hands - when is completely random. and there are many games with better odds for the house than slots. slots are just fast and don't require much staff for many players.

There is no need for casinos to control anything. Slot games just are the favourite games for casinos since they have the best odds for them. Even if somebody wins something it is a small win and probable less than he/her actually already threw in the machine.

Each slot machine has a random number generator that works only for that slot. There is no linking of machines other than a jackpot feature. The PC for a machine is only alterable though a few points.

They're not rigged in land casinos. i've read that certain sections of the casino payout more such as slots near the entrance and slots near the cashier. It has heavy traffic of people and they will see that slots are paying and make them want to play.

How do you think they make money if they don't rig it? Most casinos now have penny slots that're touch screen and has cartoons that're themed to the machine. You get more than what you paid for in entertainment, especially if you're as old as my mother and aunt: they go giddy whenever they see something loony on those things...

WIth modern slots, the line is blurred.
With any computer, it is impossible for that computer to create a truly random series of numbers. The best that can be done is to program the computer to generate a very long sequence of numbers that mimics a random series.
But, if the computer is programmed to combine that sequence with something uncontrolable (such as the thousandth of a second that the handle is pulled), then you get as close to random as possible.
