Probably saving lives.

One day, while on light duty - I had broken my elbow while on a call, I was assisting at a community function by taking blood pressures.

A lady came up to me and said: "do you remember me?" I said, "mam, I meet dozens of people every day, I am sorry I don't." She then said that I had saved her life several early when she was having a severe asthma attack. She described the location and situation and I remember it. She then hugged me and said goodbye. She is the first and only person to have ever done that. It was an awesome feeling and I will never forget that day.

A 19 year paramedic/firefighter.

Yipes! How many times are you going to ask the same question?

I love my job. It can be stressful at times, and it's hard working a 24 hour on, 48 hour off schedule. Sometimes I get fustrated with the patients that call 911, but don't need our services (they really need a taxi to the hospital), but for the most part, I enjoy my job. I love helping people, and I enjoy the high stress nature of the work. But it's not for everyone.

You are only 12 years old, and you don't have to make a decision on what to do with your life yet. When I was 12, I wanted to be a paramedic, but I also wanted to be a fighter pilot, police officer, and firefighter. Just give it time, check out all the things you are interested in, and when you are old enough to go to school, pick the one thing that's managed to keep your interest.

If you are interested, there's usually an Explorer's program at most fire departments. It's a bit like the Scouts, and you meet once a week to learn about fire and EMS, and you can do ride-alongs on the ambulance. It's a good and inexpensive way to find out if you are interested in the field.

Hope this helps!

You get to come into somebody's life when it is at its absolute worst. Hopefully, you can do something to make things a little better for them. No 2 shifts are ever the same. You are challenged every shift. I love working 24 hours on, 48 hours off. It leaves you with a lot of free time to explore other interests. The pay is decent. Benefits are great if you work for a city. I would suggest looking into an explorer program. Check out your local fire department website. They can give you all the info you need, and it will give you a first hand look at what fire/ems are really like. It's a wonderful job, but there are some downsides. The hours are long. The stress level is very high, and you have to be able to leave your patients at work. If you choose a career in paramedicine, you will witness the end of people's lives. You have to be able to leave that on the street. Worst of all, if people don't get the outcome they want, they can easily blame you even though you did all you could. The job has its ups and downs, but I can't see myself doing anything else. Hope that helps.

No two days are ever the same. Sure we see a lot of complaints more often than others, but no call is the same. There is not desk (I lie...there is...where I do paperwork) and I am more or less always on the move. I am put in situations where I have to think and make decisions about the best treatment for my patient and I'm not mindlessly doing assigned tasks. Also there are lights and sirens. Thats a big one. I'm an adrenaline junky and nothing does the job like a cardiac arrest with a gun shot wound to the chest.
