I was recently diagnosed and I was just wondering if there were any tricks or any soothing stimulants to deter any complications that may arise over time?

You could try meditation and Yoga, like the Sun Salutation, and some things like that. You should be able to get a tape or DVD in the Special Interest section of most stores that sell videos.

exercise and a healthy diet is a good bet. Also, it sounds crazy, but a lot of the symptoms of bipolar disorder, depression and chronic fatigue are also symptoms of dehydration. Make sure you are getting enough water. Not soda or juice or coffee... water. Even if these things do not help the bipolar issues, they will help you with other things that may be wrong in your body, which would make you feel better over all. Make sure you are getting no less that 7 hours and no more than 9 hours of sleep a night too. Your body is like an ecosystem, if you take one thing out, the whole system starts messing up to compensate.

Sorry to hear your diagnoses.

My husband is bi-polar and he refuses to take the medications because of teh side effects. Personally I feel he didn't try long enough to find the right medication but I'll tell you how we deal with his illness without medication.

First of all you will need help, talk to your family and friends and help them A understand the illness and hwo to recognixe the different episodes of manic and depression so they can react accordingly.
Manic episodes- have family or friends who can keep you from caffine, sugar, drugs and any tpye of simulant this will only make things worse but durng a manic period you may feel 'out of control and attempt to even things out with normal foods or substances and do impulsuve things. Every bi-polar is different so only YOU and your doctor can identify manic behavior. For some it is partying out of control for the next it may be shopping or drug use so make sure your family knows what to head off. Try keeping home and surroundings calm and try meditation for those truly 100 mile an hour mind racing moments that overwhelm you.

Depression or lows- again protect yourself from harmful substances. Depression can bring feelings of suicide and even if the thuoght hasn't occured or seems alien now as time progresses it will become a very real issue for you so have a plan and sign a medical proxy now so in the event you can't clearly think for yourself someone you trust can. You can chnage a proxy and dictate terms of what they can and cannot do so research a little and write it as you feel comfortable. Ask family and friends to be paitent and encouraging don't let themselves get sucked into a debate over your low feelings but remind you they care and would miss you and life without you is far worse then with your illness.

These may seem like simple 'duh' things but preparedness is key and so is understanding.
St John's is an herb that has good effect when lows hit and sometimes helps with highs find what works for you but please inform your doctor what you take how much and also a trusted family and friend so if something happens medical teams can treat you properly. OCT herbal remedies can affect hospital care options.

Good luck.

I spoke with my clinical psychologist yesterday about my own bipolar. Unlike schizophrenia, they are not yet certain about what part of the brain controls bip. As a result, the meds have come about more or less by hit or miss. There are no known natural ways of controlling it via herbs. Clutter feels good to the manic and depresses the depressed. Regular bedtime helps.
Med wise - don't be afraid to let the doctor try them out and don't be afraid to tell him / her "not this one." There are some good places on the 'net to read about the drugs and possible side effects.
I am sorry about the disease, but relieved you got diagnosed.

One of my best friends is bipolar, and she "loves her Lamictol..." = ) I'm happy she finally found the right drug for her...
As for natural remedies, I would suggest some type of calming tea, like chamomile, or Yogi Tea Healing Formula DeTox....they have so many out there now. I myself prefer Stash chai spice decaf tea when I want to unwind.
You will need meds to control the depressive episodes and mania swings, sorry, but it's unavoidable. You don't want to play around and take chances on that. The depression can get pretty bad. I was with my friend through her pre-diagnosis, diagnostic stage, psych ward admissions and after...it was scary, but she is doing so much better now. I was glad to be able to help her through it all. Find someone you can trust to help you through this time. You won't be sorry.

One Word..Prayer. I too am bipolar. Medicines help some but you asked for natural. I'm not aware of any natural products that could actually help. Bipolar is too complicated for herbs to help (my opinion). Surround yourself with good friends, good things, and always remember you're never alone. You have God. He made us the way we are for a reason. It's not are place to question why. Bipolar is not the end of your world. Now that you have a dx. you should be on the road to recovery.

This is not a quick fix but I find routines help with my bipolar. Bipolar seems to mess with the natural rhythms of the body, and having external routines helps the internal rhythms stay more stable. I have found that in taking good, regular care of my body and my home, I have decreased my swings a great deal.

I was diagnosed about a year ago. I went through the theropy and all the medicine. And come to find that I can control it on my own. All I have to do is find something that calms me down when I get the tendacy to be mad. Like poetry or screaming to music. You just have to find something that soothes you, for when you get mad. And for when you get sad. Find something that makes you happy. You really don't need to take medication for it, due to the fact bi-polar disorder is un-treatable.

I know that eating fish 2-3 times a week, or directly taking fish oil pills can help. The main reason is to get omega-3 fatty acids-the healthy fat...It helps nerve conduction, which is important in the brain sending/recieving signals.
