Probably Buddhism is world's first organised semitic religion with celeb priests having the control. Buddism derived its energy from "Sanathan Dharma", now called Hinduism. While Hinduism deals with all subtle and Gross aspects of life, probably Buddhism concentrated more on the Gross aspects to solve the problems of the world. that's why probably Sankaracharyar could debate and win over the Buddhist Monks. Sankaracharyar brought the subtle aspects of life forward and the Buddhist Monks with Gross Laws and Technology to run the world could not counter his arguements. similarly you can see the organised religions always try to evade to the subtle point logical arguements, cause if they do it their existence may seem in danger. Any way nothing wrong in assuming that Buddhism is a child of Hinduism and if you go further probably Christianity, Islam, Capitalism and Marxism probably subsequent children and everything is a Family affair ... Probably the concept is "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam"

We both believe in reincarnation, meditation, and Hinduism claims that Buddha was one of the avatars of Vishnu. However, Buddhists do not believe this. The main difference is that Buddhists are agnostic, we neither believe nor disbelieve in any higher power, while Hindus believe in the divine force Brahman. Also, Buddhists destroy their ego when they reach Nirvana while Mokksha cleanses it. Our religious texts also differ, hinduism has the Vedas and us buddhists have the Tripitaka. Those are the main diffrences and similarities. Oh yes, and Hinduism believes in asceticism while Buddhism thinks it is the wrong approach.

According to Vaishnava Theology, (who are devotees of Vishnu or Krishna), Buddha is an incarnation of Krishna or God himself.
Srimad Bhagavatam written around 3500 BC has prediction of Buddha Incarnation of the Lord.
There it is said that the priests would start misusing the Vedic Scriptures and patronize Animal Sacrifices for collecting wealth for them selves. The Lord having compassion on the animals and save the general people of this ghastly sin will incarnate as Lord Buddha. He would remove the Vedas and will preach his own doctrine. Removing Vedas would stop this animal sacrifices.
Lord Visnu will then order lord Shiva to incarnate as Sankaracharya and reestablish Vedic Literature. But Lord Shiva would not be very powerful to destroy the influence of Lord Buddha, and hence he will preach similar to Buddhism, By giving false interpretation of Vedic Literatures (Mayawada).
Lord then will himself come again as Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to establish all the principles of Vedic Religion and explain the truth.

Lord Buddha did not say anything about God. He simply asked the people to follow him and first learn basic principles as Compassion on other living entity.
Buddhism however evolved and have developed concept of Nirvana or Spiritual emancipation. The theory is that since this material existence is cause of all Suffering and hence destroying this material existence complete will free us. They go the extent of stating that the soul also needs to be destroyed into nothing.

Vedic Scriptures states that Soul being qualitatively same as God the supreme Soul, it is eternal. The Goal is to destroy only the material existence and go back to kindom of God.

i just going briefly through it.
hinduism is the original one. buddhism is an offshoot of h. so they believe in a lot of common things like karma and reincarnation. h. has one supreme creator who is represented in various aspects by the hindu dieties. not all b.s believe that there is a god or some dont think that its all that important. both religions view god as a spectator who doesnt interfere in humans lives (although in hinduism, vishnu often reincarnates himself (avatars) to teach humans a lesson in order to steer them to the path of salvation). they both believe in the similar sort of salvation. nirvana for b. and moksa for h. to get to it, you need good karma, devotion and knowledge. meditation is also a big part of both religions. it helps you to clear your mind. (theres obivously a lot more than that but i dont have the time to go into that)
the big difference is materialistic things. the h. have castes. (social classes) that are determined by your previous lifestyle. in b. there is no such thing. in b. to obtain salvation, you need to seperate yourself from the materialistic things in life like money and other possesions, because they inspire greed, esp. money, which leads to bad emotion, and then to bad actions motivated by bad emotion, which means that you get bad karma. b. also dont tolerate violence of any kind or anything harmful, including hurtful words and mean thoughts. most b.s are vegetarian but not all.
another big difference is that there is no set way to follow in b. they do have "standard" beliefs like how to get to nirvana, things about the buddha, material possesions and harmful actions/thoughts, the 8 fold path. but pretty much other than that b. varies from region to region.
