There is a girl I know from where I work and we occasionally see each other but rarely talk. On a few occasions we happened to cross paths at a mall or somewhere else. My question is how can I really break the ice with her and make myself more familiar with her?

Why not stop her the next time you see her, and engage her in brief conversation? If she's interested in you as well, she'll either be willing to stand and chat a few mins...or will make sure she crosses your path again soon (and perhaps will be the one to stop you for a chat).

You can break the ice by first saying hello to her and let her know you exist. Second try finding out things about her, but not from her from people that know her so that when she realizes you know that it will surprise her, and give you good points with her.

Small talk... Then go from there. Possibly suggest a coffee date after work. But first, find a way to make small talk, it goes a long way in finding out if she's receptive.

Start with a simple "HELLO". Once you've pass that then the rest will be easy, because next time a simple hello will lead to a long conversation.
And before you know it, you both will be looking forward to talking to each other.

How about approaching her directly, re-introduce yourself and tell her i'd like to get to know u with your most charming smile
Let her make the next statement/move and go from there
Obviously if she walks away, well, lesson learned and then move on
If not, keep talking!

since she really seems to like the mall tell her you saw her and maybe you two could go there together to...(whatever the mall has that might interest her)my mall has great chinese food in the food court

Make eye contact with her and smile. If she responds positively (smiles back), say hi and introduce yourself. That should get her talking.

hmmm... you could do something as simple as say hi or just kinda goof off and act stupid around her, make her laugh or smile. make eye contact... anything to get the ball rolling.
