It is called a depressant because its depresses the central nervous system, eg, you dont feel normal sensations, your thinking capacity is not clear. Its a medical terminology.

Drinking for some people does relieve their stress for the above reasons, but for some it puts them in a really depressed state and they can think of all terrible things, e.g. suicide. If you are feeling sad and lonely and you get drunk, you will probably feel worse. The problem with alcohol though, the only way you are going to forget about your problems is to stay drunk for the rest of your life because when you sober up your problems are still there.

Getting drunk loses a person inhibitions, so they are more inclined to act out how they are feeling without worrying too much about what people are thinking. I think that is why a person gets drunk when they are depressed because they can let out everything they are feeling and have no conscience. Its the waking up the next morning that is the worry because you think about how you acted when you were drunk and a lot of times you did nothing but embarrass yourself.

Getting drunk solves nothing....it causes more problems than it is worth.

I really like this question. And let me answer it coming from somebody who has experienced very similiar issues.

Actually, it very much can be both. It is a depressant, but that doesn't mean it makes you depressed!

When people refer to a depressant, its something that slows down the bodys functioning. Makes you think a bit slower, makes you feel a little slower, makes you not so quick to care about things. Makes you not so quick to use better judgement.

Have several drinks and try and play speed chess. You'll see the changes very, very easily.

Another perspective is looking at stimulants. Ritalin is a stimulant but they give it to kids with ADHD. Its similar to drinking a pot of coffee in an hour. If you're in good health, give it a try. You'll be doing the armchair marathon. You're body will be so wound up, you'll won't be able to run around like a hyperactive maniac, despite the pot of coffee...

This is coming from a coffee addict too ;) I also like my beer very much.

The best thing to know about alcohol is that it can do several things. Moderation is key. Know how you react on it. I've heard that some people only need about three drinks and they start asking cops if they are Jews. *cough, cough* (mel) *cough* Trust the opinions of those who know you best. Know what drinks you can or cannot have and how much. Everyone is different.

Both are true. The fact is, it's a depressant, but it's also a mind altering chemical. the reason some people say it makes them feel better and forget their problems is because of the mind altering aspect. While they are drinking, it's temporarily making/helping them forget the problems.

In reality they are just putting off dealing with the situations. Drugs and alcohol are NOT the answer to any problem. They are just another problem that you will have to deal with down the line.

I feel that at the time, it may help you feel a little better, since (at least in my case) i feel happy and laugh a lot. But once the alcohol is out of your system, I feel even worse than I did before, which makes me want to do it again, but I stop myself because I know that alcoholism is very prevalant in my family. It depends on what type of drunk you are. If you are a happy drunk, it may buy you a few hours of good fun, but beware of once that feeling wears off, you may just feel worse than u did before. If youre a miserable drunk, then you'll be just as miserable before, during, and afterwards.

Not at all.... You may feel better while you are intoxicated but when that wears off you will generally feel more depressed (even if you are not hungover). I work in a hospital and I have heard drs tell patients that regular use of alcohol can lessen the effects of anti-depressants

Alcohol is a depressant. You may like the buzz at first and maybe you do forget your problems for awhile but those problems are still there when you are sober. But getting drunk only compounds the problem. Why do you think the nations primary addiction is alcohol? It takes courage to face your problems sober. Not to mention the fact that your killing brain cells.

No it does not help, some people may temporarily forget their problems, but most get hit very hard when they come down from their buzz. Regardless, being depressed and getting drunk causes you to do stupid things that you would not normally do, things that you regret or things that could be very harmful to you.

Just don't chance it.

Getting drunk when you're depressed can make you think you feel better, but it's not a good idea. Getting medical or psychological help when you're depressed is a better option.

Alcohol reduces anxiety, which is symptomatic of depression. The problem is that alcohol wears off and the depressed person hasn't dealt with what made him anxious, and so he needs to drink again. Meanwhile alcohol acts as a depressant on his system allowing him to become more chemically depressed.

No, I can't drink alcohol although my family members are social drinker. I feel get to dream if I have a can of beer. And I am insisting to drink in the public area as I don't want to give any bad image to the others.
