My son came home with homework and has to SPELL the word devil. What the hell? He didnt even know what the hell it was.. so I had to quick tell him it was a halloween costume...
This is insane. I wish these schools would leave religion out of it.

Pagan poet- I did not lie to my child. We do not believe in god, or the devil...
and kids *do* wear this as a halloween costume around here.
And he knows god is a fictional character, just like harry potter. He's only mentioned in a book.

he has to look at the picture, then spell the word. So its not a food, or an animal. Its the "devil" that's portrayed in the bible... THATS why im so upset. Like I said, he had no idea what the hell the picture was...
darn, i said hell again.. aww hell.. darnit..

Damn that sucks... next thing you know they're gonna have him spelling Jesus and put a morbid picture of a guy with nails through him hanging from 2X4's.

I don't agree.
Are you kidding? You keep saying, "what the hell...what the hell." You sure you don't believe in it?
Even if the school hadn't asked him to spell devil, I bet he'd eventually ask you what the devil was, given your penchant for talking about the devil's home.
Sarcasm aside, is asking your kid to spell devil REALLY bringing religion into the school?
Additional Details
If the devil is just a halloween costume, why do you care? They asked your son to spell a halloween costume. Whoopty Doo.

I doubt the school intended any religious statement by that. Otherwise, Devil would have been capitalized. There is a common secular understanding and use of the word "devil".
So your son shouldn't learn how to spell Christianity or faith or any other words related to religion?
[crucifixion? resurrection? church?]
The devil, with horns and all, is not portrayed as such in the Bible. That image came from a pagan belief. Now, it is a secular idea which has nothing to do with religion.

Well, not to play devil's advocate (pardon the pun), but there's such a thing as cultural literacy. Just because one does not subscribe to the idea of a literal devil doesn't necessarily mean that the word "devil" has been purged from the dictionary.
Given the state of the modern educational system, just be glad they're teaching your kid to spell anything at all.

Ok, I'm one of the biggest supporters of leaving religion out of school. But the word devil (if it's not capitalized) is part of our languange in a non-religious way and while I really don't think it need to be in spelling class for a young kid I don't really have a problem with it.

They are quick to teach them the wrong things and make everything material, but no one wants to say who God is and what he does for everyone. The devil is everywhere and no one cares. They promote the things he likes sex, money, and drugs. TV and schools have all of those things. Schools act as if it is a money thing, but the money is not put into the school. No one knows where it goes. These children are making kids younger and younger and performing sexual acts at school. They need to say a prayer every morning for the safety of these children and their future education because they partly contribute to them being idiots if that is what they grow up to be. They are not teaching them money does not grow on trees at an early age and God woke you up and made it possible for you to even get where you need to go.

Well, I don't believe in the devil, neither does my 16 yr old son, but that, I don't think would bother me. Now if the teacher started making comments that "this is what you will end up with for eternity if you don't believe...." well, hell, I'd be the first one up at that school to give that teacher a lesson of his own.

i agree,
what if your kid had to spell Eostre, Christians?
Do you know who that is? The the pagan goddess of spring and the origin of easter.
Christians complain that they can't pray in school, that they can't send preachers there to teach. Yet they still are a big influence and their holidays ae still celebrated by schools. ex. halloween and christmas
simplestar, you really are simple if you believe that lack of religion is the cause of school shootings. 75% of the prison population is christians, but only 0.2% of prison population is atheists, while christians are 75% of the population and atheists are 10% of the US population. not being religious doesn't make you more likely to commit a crime

I don't know what state you live in, but i'm studying to be a teacher and i know that in california it is expected that all public school students grades k-12 are expected to know and understand many things about the bible and Christianity itself.... It's posted on the government state standards website....
You've probably heard this before, but i wonder why people so badly want religious mentions completely out of school, but then blame or claim there is no God when misguided teens shoot up the school....
