My friend is almost 40 and has had very little dating success. He has dated two women for several months, that in my opinion seemed interested at first, but was unable to strike up any chemistry with them and get beyond being friends. He is dating a new lady tonight and needs all the advice he can get.

How do you strike up the romance on a date? (Both on the first date or later on down the line.)

When I say he hasn't gotten beyond friendship, I mean not even a kiss.

No my friend is not very interesting. His interests are things I would think many find mundane: weather, statistics, religious factoids.

He is not very knowledgeable of pop culture.

He claims to be interested, but seems not to take much initiative when actually on the date. He is very timid, and seems to have the sort of "good things will come to those who wait mindset".

Your friend should work on several things if he's avoided attraction for so long.

1) Work on simple things such as hygeine, dress style, physical appearance. these factors account for 10%, but can go far.

2) Using a statement that elicits her intent. "This will never work, I can tell you're the controlling type." These statements force the girl to evaluate him as dating material, and usually the girl will try to convice him she's not controlling.

3) If his experiences at 40 are still lacking, he is probably not initiating contact properly. He should practice putting his hand on her shoulder, hugging, even high fives. The goal is for her to become comfortable with him touching her, and to realize it is desirable without being overtly sexual initially.

4) If he experiments with cocky yet funny statements he can also improve his attraction level. These are a little more advanced, but can yield powerful results. "You're just talking to me because you heard I'm good in bed," said with a smile to and proper posture to indicate a joke would be a good example.

5) Finally, I'd guess this guy tries to buy affection, which is the most basic and unfortunate mistake a guy can make. Instead, have him avoid flowers and romantic gestures until he has started dating her.

These basics will improve his dating exponentially if he practices them.

confidence if she is going out with you i mean your friend she already likes "them" start of slowly bu holding her hand or running your finger down the inside of her arm. at the end of the date look her in the eyes and say you have to kiss her. tell your friend to just keep telling themselves that this woman likes and as long as he doesn't turn into a animal all little affection on his part will go along way
