Kitty has a problem. Sounds like allergies - quite possibly food allergies. Change his diet to one of the natural brands.
My Vet recommended head and shoulders dry scalp shampoo for my kitty. Also - any kind of spray on de-tangler can be sprayed on to help the snarls comb out. Wash kitty at least 1 a week for a month. See what happens and change the food. If this doesn't work, go to the Vet for help.

If you like a challenge, then you could try giving him a bath...other than that, well...there might me some medicine for dandruff...probably a medicated shampoo which will lead you back to the bath part. Good luck if you have to do that...cats really do not like water...definately not a myth.

I have had a similar problem with my cat. So I took him to a vet, and shaved him...this got rid of the hair clumps and the danderuff build up. It costs about 20 dollars but your cat (as long as it is an indoor cat)will be much better off!

My 8 year old cat has also given up on grooming himself! I feed him a good quality food, like Iams. If you find one that has added fish oils like the hairball care, you find his coat will get better. This will also help with the dandruf a bit. He is getting older and this is what happens....
