I'm due to finish my job on friday so I can become a mature student at University. The thing is I have two young children and am having real concerns about whether I'm doing the right thing or not. My job is boring although it has good perks, yet I've always wanted to study but as the time draws nearer I realise more and more that I have no idea what I am letting myself in for. I'd love to hear from people who have been in the same situation to see how you've found it. Genuine answers only please.

It will be tough. School is something that you're not used to anymore and it will probably take you some time to figure out a schedule that works for you and the kids. However, don't talk yourself out of it just because it will be new and tough.

This will be a great thing for all of you. You will end up in work you'll be happier doing. But for your kids? What better incentive could you give them to work hard, take chances, and go for what makes them happy? You could tell them that every day, but if you didn't do it they wouldn't believe it.

I just finished my masters degree at 45, though I don't have kids. (I was 29 when I finished my bachelors degree, then went through a few more detours...) I had classmates who were in school and raising kids. You can do this!

I'm in the same boat, kinda. My job is very boring I just sit here for 8 hours waiting for the phone to ring, the mail, etc. But I get paid very well & I come & go as I please or take the day off when I want. But I need to feel useful, like I have a purpose in life other than to just sit here. I know I'm smart & could do so much more with myself & have applied for part-time jobs w/ the local school district (no luck yet) but haven't scrounged up enough courage to go back to school. I think as long as your kids are cared for, you're doing the right thing. It may be hard at first, but it'll pay off in the end. Do it know before your kids get older & there's no time for yourself. Good luck :o)

Well do you have a means to support yourself while your going to school, housing, etc. Acquiring knowledge is always a good thing if it's so you can get a better carrier even better. Your worried about doing it now but in a couple years wouldn't you rather have it done with and a better more intellectually stimulating job. Than worrying about it then.

Such a good thing you are doing. You are planning to provide a better future for your children and a great role model for them too. Yes it is hard to study and run a household at the same time, but believe me it is worth it.

Very good luck to you.

yes it sounds to me like you are doing the right thing...I am a mum and I am starting university next September. (I deferred my place for a year to make sure my son is settled after me and his dad split up) I am sure I am doing the right thing, I could get a boring job and settle but it is always best to achieve your full potential in a career that you love... this also teaches our kids to go on to aspire to achieve their full potentials too.

go for it.... it'l be worth the hard work

If you don't go for it you will always wonder how much better your situation would have been if you had.
You are just having the last minute jitters. It will go away after your first class.

hey thats really brave of you - i am myself considering doing a degree but I cant pack my job in and I work shifts - i think its great if you want to furtehr yourself but its only really worthwhile if you are going to do something with it, in my opinion. I think if its something that will get you into a career that you will enjoy then go for it.
