I am really curious if anyone with Appalachia roots, a Caucasian background, dark Melungeon coloring or Gibson/Collins surname has ever had a DNA test to find a link similar to people of Jewish or Mediterranean descent.

Hey 2manydogs,
Well, I have not done the research on these roots. However, here are the results from searching for DNA participants. There are matches for each of the 3 surnames at the web site below. I copied the quantities of participants, and there are multiple studies.

Try
http://genforum.genealogy.com/melungeon/
It has 17,000 posts on Melungeons.

There are only a dozen people who answer posts here who are competent genealogists. Rust Skipper is one. I'm another. He drinks less and types better. You should look at a few posts beofre you post your own query, to get an idea of the tone of th eboard. Most o fth epeopl ehere are under 18, and they aren't smart enough to read the resolved Q. They ask either

"How do I find my family tree for free?"
or
"What does {surname} mean?

Over and over and over again. I answer both 1 - 6 times a day. So does RS. We are gluttons for punishment.

Hi,
You sound like Debbie or Delores, two people from my family! We got stuck in East Tennessee/North Carolina at a male ancestor whom we probably all thought was Native American Indian who first appeared right after the Trail of Tears (about 1840 is when the children first showed up with a grandparent who was white), because of facial bone structure of children and other descendants in photos. I got stuck, and haven't talked to them in a long time. I wish you the best of luck!
