Because everyone thinks that if you marry in Vegas the pastor will be an Elvis impersonator, Startrek fanatics your fiance's groomsmen and a transvestite dressed as Dolly Parton your maid of honor, since it has been made fun of in tons of movies, tv series (like Friends) and because of the whirlwind marriages of pop stars (like Britney Spears) no one really thinks that getting married in Vegas is for real.
I suppose there are some great places, but since Vegas is called Sin City (and for good reason) the stigma will always exist.

People think that because it's been sold in movies as a way to get married by an Elvis impersonator when you're drunk and your judgment is impaired.
One of my friends got married in Vegas last year, because they wanted it to be just them. They planned it out ahead of time, bought a wedding package (I think the place was Little Chapel of the Flowers), and stayed in a fabulous hotel room. They got to spend more on it than they would have been able to afford on a honeymoon if they'd had a wedding at home, and it was something special for just the two of them.
The package they got included photos and a DVD of the ceremony, which everyone got to see when they got back. It was a beautiful ceremony, and it means a lot to them that they got to do it their way.
When they tell people that they got married in Vegas, some do have the reaction of thinking that it must have been cheesy, but they know that it wasn't. If you decide to go that route, just be prepared for a few uneducated people to assume that you were married by Elvis. (Unless of course you want to go that way... more power to ya if you do.)

because people who fly to Vegas from across the country don't take into consideration that not everyone wants to spend their vacation time and money on THEIR wedding. That's the cheesy part. If you're having a destination wedding, you should be willing to pay for your immediate family to go to it!

Getting married in Vegas could be great! I think a drive by chapel in Vegas on the other hand is cheesy. On the other hand, think of all the money they saved.

Most people don't realize that there are alternatives to the drive-thrus and Elvis weddings. I went to a wedding in Vegas and it was beautiful. The couple got married in Red Rock Canyon, gorgeous.

When we were planning our wedding 2 years ago, Las Vegas was our second option. We went with our first option, which was Jamaica. And we paid for all of our immediate family.
