The depression has to be clinical depression. They'd do a CAT scan where they basically take a picture of your brain and find some abnormalities. Also EEG's are given to detect unusual brain wave patterns. Tennessee would be like any other state in the Union under the Federal Disabilities Act of 1990, so it would be Federal, just channeled through the state. They'd also give you an EKG which measures electrolyte activity. If it is a clinical or biological depression it will be detected. If you are just sad because of say, for example, a death in the family there will be nothing physically wrong with you to support a claim of disability.

Yes they can and do. You have to be diagnosed with depression by a psychiatrist. They base the diagnosis on clinical findings and symptoms.
There is no specific test for depression. They can not detect it on an EKG....as the EKG monitors your heart...not your brain.
They would only do a CAT scan if there are other physical symptoms and it is not routine in diagnosing depression. The same with EEGs. I have major depressive disorder and was not given these tests. They are expensive and not always necessary.
