There are plenty of atheists in foxholes.
I've been in quite a few.
I've deployed many times and in the last 5 years I have been away from my family for 3 1/2.
I am a Fire Team leader in Security Forces and have been all over the middle east.
Anyways, death comes easy to those who do not fear it. Religious or not.

Standard foxhole conversion generally lasts approximately 72 hours (give or take 4 hours) and necessitates total cessation of all nutritional and psychological sustinence until conversion is complete. Post-conversion religious persuasion varies depending on the land of origin for each individual transformed. The effect on average lasts as long as a mouse fart and is in no way a genuine change or a lasting transformation because THIS ENTIRE ANSWER IS BS.
There are atheists that go into foxhole, stay in foxholes, and come out of foxholes. Christians are just used to assuming that everyone ELSE is like them: scared out of their minds to put their life on the line unless there's some sort of supernatural contingency plan.

There are plenty of atheists in foxholes. There's even an organization they can join, the Military Association of Atheists and Freethinkers (http://www.maaf.info/).
If an atheist has a religious experience in a foxhole, chances are good he or she will adopt the religion that is most familiar, the religion he or she grew up in as a child.
Since most of the wars throughout history have been over religion, there have been lots of religions that have thrown atheists into foxholes. There aren't statistics on how many adopted a religion during this experience or how long the effect lasted.
Does it make them holy? Probably no more holy than the next guy.
By the way, if you want to read about how the saying got started, see this article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atheists_in_foxholes.

Saudi Arabia is really like huge strict Islamic foxhole with no tolerance with other religions and many people (expats)of other religions live there and I see thousands of non Muslims converted to Islam each year and may be millions others been exposed to strong Islamic culture and millions brainwashed I think it takes less effort to convert theist to Islam than atheist if ever.

Even though I'm laughing right now, and I thought it was because I would never actually get into a foxhole, here are some serious thoughts from an atheist in a fox hole:
"This one is acutely annoying for me because I was in Uncle Sam's Misguided Children (USMC) in the infantry and now I'm a cop. I've had my share of close calls and "Level 10 Pucker Factor" incidents and calling on a god just never came to mind. My partner was in The Corps in Vietnam in the infantry and according to him, he never saw any gods or called on any. He managed to live through the ordeal and come away with a Bronze Star and two Enemy Marksmanship medals (Purple Hearts). Not only was he an atheist in a foxhole, but he was a bona fide hero to boot. I know seven other heathens at the dept. I work at and they've never "called His name" either. Isn't it funny that every damn Fundy will spout this **** off but will never bother to consider if it is even slightly based in fact. I have also discussed this with countless heathens online and I have yet to meet one who went through rough times or a near death experience and called on any god."

Who do the families of atheists call when one is on their death bed or to do the funeral, the bar tender? They call a minister of God. Mortality has a way of hastening the choice, one day it will indeed be too late.
We are worth a Son to God.

Probably, when the bullets start flying! I don't think it makes them religious or holy; just plain scared and hoping that perhaps there is a God out there.

I've stared death in the eye on more than one occasion, and I've had a doctor tell me just how close I came to losing my son.
I'm still an atheist, and I never prayed for a moment. I am THAT certain in my belief.

Are there really believers in a foxhole? I mean if there were atheists in a fox hole it would be called an atheist hole not a fox hole wouldn't it?
