The best way to find what dog you should get would be to list your likes and dislikes. Also take into consideration the size yard the dog willhave to run in and how much time you will actually have to care for and spend with the dog. Labs require less yard to run in and the size needs to increase for a Shepard and then the Afgan. Afgans do require more grooming time with their long coats, shepards a little less and labs the least. Also if you like water and swimming a lab does to. To get your dog the best way is to sit away from a group of puppies or dogs and see which one comes to you on its own. The dog that picks you will be your best companion.

I really think that you should do some research before you decide on what type of breed you obtain. Then, if you are set on one particular breed locate a reputable breeder. I can not stress to you enough how important it is that you have a good relationship with the breeder you purchase your new family member from! When a dog is bred, all they pass along is coloring and personality. Make sure you can get references from people whom have previously purchased pups from the breeder and contact them to ask how the pups are doing.
I know it sounds like a lot of work and you may think I am crazy. But trust me, it is worth it. I researched and we decided on a great dane. Unfortunatley we didn't check out the breeders and now we have a 130lb great dane that is extremely mean. It is all in the breeding!!!!
Make sure that allergies aren't going to be a factor also, this can alter your decision.
Some breeds you may want to look into are something like a golden retreiver (excellent family dog) or beagles (also good family dog). Dogs are dogs, and they need to be trained. Especially puppies!! You have to be consistent and patient, and know the breeder!!!!
Good luck!

Well the thing about big dogs is they need ALOT of walking because they have ALOT of energy. Otherwise your just going to have a hyperactive LARGE dog who'll probabl destroy your home. You also need alot of space for a big dog. But if you have space and lots of time to walk them, bigs dogs are wonderful. Germran Shepards are lovely. If I were you though I'd go for something like a beagle. They sleep all the time, they're very well tempered and they're easily trained. Although you'll need a high fence because they run off alot because they're hounds and follow their noses.

A black Lab.
All dogs can be trained. It just takes a firm hand a a firm mind.
I have a Black Labrador Retrivever and I taught her to sit and shake in less than a month.
German Shepherds are extremeley smart, I've had two and I taught one sit in less than a day.
Get a young dog. Older Shepherds are better. Mine was 3 so I'd get a female near that age.
Good Luck,
Jessica

When you see a breed that you might be interested in please do a little online research and check out their characteristics....some dogs needs lots and lots of exercise etc. get the dog that fits with you lifestyle and activity level. Whatever you do....don't get a dog if you are not prepared to TRAIN and take responsibility for the animals health and well being.

Not learning has nothing to do with the dog. It is the person holding the leash. You.
Any dog you get is not going to mind if you do not take time out to properly train it.

Any dog can be trained - professionally. You need to go to training classes with your dog no matter what the breed. You'd be suprised at how many of the dog's bad habits were your fault.

check out your local pound, unless your stuck on the idea of a purebread (sounds like health problems to me)
I rescued a Rott/Chow mix 2 years ago and she is my baby! The most loveable dog out there.
Plus, when you rescue a dog, they really cherish you.
