Because much of lfe's issues are centered around religion... the majority of Americans have christian/cathloic based heritages and religions, the crusades tend to be very influential to history like most if not all moments in history at this time christians and muslims were at war so to that extent and because of american/european background this is a very influential period, Let me ask you a question... Why aren't the events in aztecs (south americans), asians, africans, Native Americans or even the indians history considered to be the most important events of that time...? think about that question...
We as americans (the most dominant world power) tend to define the times as it is relative to our history. Because other nation look to us for assistance they assimlate our perceptions on reality and they too consider that to be the most imortant event of the middle ages. Not only that but The christianity and islam are the most prominent cultures in the world so the crusades effect approximatly 60%-70% of the world. i hope that helps.

That statesment surprises me, where did you learn that! I think it´s up to everyone themeselfes to decide what´s most important about that time. But if what you say is what you learned I would guess it´s because the Churche issues was so extremely powrful at least in Europe at that time, it ruled governements and set the way of living for all our Christian countries. Many of our moral standards are still remains from that period.
But personally, I would add, even some of our most narrowminded pittyness is. Like accepting women ecual to men, homosexuallity, free abortions, devorces between loveless couples ........
But I guess one have to admit that the time of the Crusaides (more than the Crusaids themselfes) was a revolutionary time that still affect us a lot.

At the time, there were a lot of threats towards Christianity and the faith. Many wanted it abolished, and some wanted only Catholicism to remain. The crusaders were influential in that they prevented this from happening. It is because of them that we are able to read the Bible in public, go to church in public, and be free to believe in what we choose to believe in.
