In answering your question, I would highly recommend that you go somewhere where they have wine tasting. You need to know what your likes and dislikes are. Check out several Red Wines and White Wines. It has been my experience that most wine tasting places have many wines from different wineries to choose from. Experiment and find out what you prefer.
No sence buying a wine that you do not prefer.

Wine is a matter of personal taste. I suggest you try a few remember ones you like. Search out tasting notes for your favourites, then look for wines with similar features. Robert Parker on-line has a wine notes feature. I use "gismondionwine.com" because He in B.C based and therefore most relevant to my area. Good luck and Cheers!

Depends upon the meal as there are really soooooo many kinds of not only good but great wines; a study in itself. Hope you are young enough to enjoy decades of pleasure and discovery!
One short general tip: yes, a dry Riesling for most fish and a Merlot for most red meats

Reisling!! It is the best ever!! It is a white semi sweet wine.. I do not know anyone who doesnt like it, even the ones who drink dry reds or whites!! I dont know where you live but here in Colorado we have a local winery and it is called Laughing Cat Reisling!! I have tried tons and tons of different ones and I keep going back to that one.. also there is one called Relax in a blue bottle which is good too!! Go to the Olive Garden and sample wines one night. then you can try them all out yourself!!

Try a Malbec from Argentina. It's usually around $10 and is a great meal wine or even fro sitting around.

Too broad a question. Stick to some basic categories like:
Red or white?
Sweet or Dry
Sparkling or Still
Any particular country?
What price range? There are good ones in all price ranges. Some are better value for money than others so price alone is not indicative.

For good and cheap I like Austrailian Shiraz. Little Penguin is my favorite.
Go to a wine shop and talk to the folks who work there.
