‘God Save the Queen/King’ is an Anachronism. It is a throw-back to an age of empires and a religious populous. I am happy (though not jingoistic) about being British, and English, and I feel embarrassed that the music that is used to represent my country is this song.
When so many people no longer have a strong religious faith, and so many people do not support the monarchy, how can this song/hymn represent us?
I want it replaced by something that tells us a bit about what Britain! Sure there are lots of things we have done (and not done) that we can’t be proud of but there are lots of things we can be proud of – just like any country!
I can’t say what the national anthem should be, but we can decide that later. First let us agree we need to find one that better suits our country in the new millennium.
I have set up an online petition: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/New_UK_Anthem/
Who wants to help me promote it? Send the link on!!

Good call. What about the Sex Pistols version of God save the Queen?

I am very proud of my country and its National Anthem, why do people always want to change things. We have some fantastic national songs such as Jerusalem, I vow to thee my Country and Rule Britania, but I would not want to change God save the Queen, leave it alone if you dont like it dont sing it.

Yea man best suggestion ive heard for centurys.....im 400 years old and that tune is driving me insane, I never miss an opportunity
to upset the sheeples by staying sat firmly on my **** if i am ever unfortunate enough to be within earshot of the retched noise
while all around jump to attention and sing the praises of a crime syndicate that has been royally shafting them collectively and individually for centurys. I NAME THAT TUNE IN 1

The current anthem is a dirge and totally out of touch with modern life. I'm with Billy Connelly who wants to have Barwick green (the theme from 'The Archers') as a new anthem.
And if we get rid of the anthem we could get rid of the Monarchy at the same time.

Grow up, where did you get the idea everyone is against the monarchy? They are good for Britain and remember the Commowealth still exists as an indipendent group. You'll have to change Americas anthem also because ours is part of theirs, the same as both constitutions are taken from the Magna Carta.

As a nation, we are all hung-up on the past, and that is OK with me. If that means retaining a royal family and singing about the Queen in an anachronistic old song, then I'll go along with that as well.
We look forward as well as backwards; we are good at that.

I'm completely with you. I love my country, I hate Monarchy. And what exactly has 'God Save The Queen' got to do with the country in the first place? Nothing! Also England should have it's own anthem, like Scotland and Wales do.

I agree. 'God save the Queen' just sounds dreary.
My family & I think 'Land of hope and glory' should have been the National Anthem. I have signed your petition.

what a pathetic loser you are. i mean, come on man, i'm not religious either and i think the monarchy's a load of shite but show a little patriotism? i know people like you. you never quite identify with what it means to be british. you just can't grasp it
i'm just sick of self-righteous twats like you who want to eradicate all religious references from our society. everything needs to be 'modernised' and ethnicised'. that's what's embarrassing.
like it or not, religion is an important part of our history. so you feel embarrassed? so what. it's not hurting you. i've been friends with lots of foreigners and they don't find our anthem cringeworthy. creating a new anthem like this is virtually unheard of, totally stupid and turns a blind eye towards our history. you see if that petition works. really. i think it will. i think we'll change our anthem because one little kook on the internet gets maybe 100 signatures.
