I know I had heard of it before 9/11, but I couldn't say exactly when. It wasn't new to me when I started hearing about it shortly after 9/11, that I'm sure of.

I first heard of Al Qaida ( the word ) when the terrorist attacks happened in New York but I didn't actually learn about them until my freshman year.

I heard the name of that organization first around the time of the embassy bombings. I took more note of it after the USS Cole incident. I was fairly aware of the term by the time 9/11 happened.

It was the Taliban who destroyed the Buddhist statues. Although allied with Al Qaeda, they are not the same thing, since the Taliban mostly consisted of ethnic Pashtun.

when Russia was out by America from Afghanistan and America saw no gain from Osama. The name "Al Qaida" is also given by America.

Years ago back when they first started tearing down the old statues of a Buddha. I think that was back in the late 90's.
