It's probably the temp of whatever is in the jars. It's too cold. Next time place the jars in the water first and then bring to a boil.

The water is really hot, and the mason jar is cold, therefore, the glass breaks. That's a pretty natural occurrence (unless the glass is Pyrex), not just with mason jars, with any glass that the temperature changes dramatically very quickly.

They were too cool before you put them in the water. Next time let them get up to at least room temperature.
