Chocolate contains a substance called "theobromine" which dogs cannot digest. Rather than passing the substance through their digestive tract, the theobromine stays inside the dog. The more you feed the dog, the more theobromine accumulates until it reaches a toxic level that can kill the dog. A "killing dose" varies by dog. Some dogs can tollerate the substance better than others... But it's best to be safe and just keep your animal away from chocolate (or any cocoa product).

Because it contains Theo Bromine, which is toxic to dogs.Even small amounts of Theo bromine, an ingredient in chocolate, can cause vomiting and restlessness in pets. Larger doses can be fatal. While most pet owners expect a dog to develop an upset stomach after eating a large amount of chocolate, few realize its danger or toxic potential.
The lethal dose of Theo bromine depends on the size of the dog and the type of chocolate. Ounce for ounce, baking chocolate has six to nine times as much of the substance as milk chocolate does.
Estimates of the smallest amounts that can be fatal are:
4 ounces of milk chocolate or 1/2 ounce of baking chocolate for small dogs, such as Chihuahuas and toy poodles.
8 ounces of milk chocolate or 2 ounces of baking chocolate for medium-sized dogs, like cocker spaniels and dachshunds.
8 ounces of milk chocolate or 4 ounces of baking chocolate for large dogs, including collies and Labrador retrievers.
Cats have much different eating habits and seldom are poisoned by chocolate.
While a very small amount of chocolate may not harm some dogs, it's safest to avoid giving it to them at all. If an accident occurs, a veterinarian should be consulted. Treatment may require inducing vomiting, stabilizing the animal's heartbeat and respiration, controlling seizures and slowing the absorption of Theo bromine. If the animal already is comatose, its stomach may need to be pumped.
Theo bromine does not completely leave the dogs system, as do some foods, my research informs me that Theo Bromine has a half life of 17.5 hours. This means that half of it has gone in 17.5 hours; in 35 hours another half of the half that was remaining will have gone.

Some kinds are toxic. My Pomeranian got into my daughters Easter basket while we were out. When we got home I prayed the dog would have just died. He had poop on all my walls all the way up to the ceiling. I still am trying to figure that one out.
Dogs should only eat dog food. My vet says they can have veggies.

Chocolate has something in it that is not good for dogs and that includes chocolate ice cream, much to the despair of the dog. You can get treats esp. for dogs and even stuff that the dog will think is icecream called Frosty Paws.

I have heard this...
but one day my husbands springer spaniel (70 pounds) ate a whole bag of Hershey kisses. He was 13 years old and he was my husbands beloved. I was flipping out because I just knew this dog was going to die a slow miserable death. I wanted to have the dogs stomach pumped, but my husband acted as though he could have cared less.
The next day the dog was still alive and there was bright colored aluminum foil in his poop outside....go figure

The truth is chocolate contains theobromine that is toxic to dogs in sufficient quantities. This is a xanthine compound in the same family of caffeine, and theophylline.
