I have a 4 yr old yorkie, and a 3 month old kitten. both male. I really am thinking I want a Doberman Pinscher. I think they are great dogs ane would love something big to wrestle around with, the yorkie falls over from me just petting him.

The thing is me and my husband both work 7-5 jobs and are out of the house mon-fri. We are always home at 5 and the cat and dog we have do well with this. The dog is very used to it and has doggy doors, etc. to get out of the house. They keep each other busy. Do you think that it would be selfish of me to get a puppy dob when I know that he will spend a lot of time at home without us?

Bringing a new puppy into your home when you're hardly ever there is selfish, yes. Puppies are like babies: they need constant attention and training when they're young, and they need lots of socialization to help them grow up emotionally healthy. If you got a puppy and left it to its own devices all day you'll be raising a pup that has little to no training, and little to no social skills. Dogs that are isolated as puppies often grow up fearful or aggressive. It's not fair to the pup to bring it home if you're not going to give it what it needs.

This doesn't mean that you cannot get another dog, however. Go to your local humane society and adopt an older dog. Older dogs are already trained and already have the coping skills they need to adjust to new environments. You'll be saving a dog that others might overlook (because of its age), and you'll be adding a new member to you family at the same time.

well my family is gone for a few hours a day so our pets cannot wait for us to come home and play with em so it makes em happy and they will have little pet friends to play with during the day!!! well that's a good thing too so its a Nice idea but be carefule... Dobermans need so much attention and early training and socialization.. Responsible Dobie ownership takes a lot of commitment in the beginning...7-5 jobs just won't do, as their is no pack leader or parenting, that is so needed while they are young..a good thing would be a doggy day care..but you would need to call around for the ones , and be certain to get a dog who has had all of his shots..they have a slow maturing immune system..

Don't get a puppy if you are going to not be alone. Older dogs are somewhat more independent. Also, don't buy from a pet store or breeder. animal shelters are the best choice and they save lives. And most dogs up for adoption have a fee of $150. If you need to find dobs at a shelter near you, visit petfinder.com

Sorry, but I think it would be disastrous... Dobermans need so much attention and early training and socialization.. Responsible Dobie ownership takes a lot of commitment in the beginning...7-5 jobs just won't do, as their is no pack leader or parenting, that is so needed while they are young..An alternative would be a good daily doggy day care..but you would need to call around for the ones that accept youngsters, and be super certain to get a dog who has had all of his shots..as Dobies have a suppressed/slow maturing immune system..
Be sure to call around for references..

You might wanna go with a nicer breed of dog in your situation. Dobermans can be great, but they can also play too rough and be violent. Why not opt for a dog that has a better demeanor - like a lab or retriever. Since your other animals are there, your new puppy would have company, but it might be harder to train him since you aren't home all that much.

It really depends on the individual dog-he would play with the Yorkie and the cat. It would take time for them to accept him, but it could be done.

Personally, I wouldn't get a new puppy if I worked those hours. Puppies need a lot of attention, so leaving it alone for 10 hours wouldnt be fair.

Yes, you should get the Doberman but you should send me your Yorkie. Mine needs a playmate his own size. Good Luck.

My dog died I would like another dog but there is no one home during the day so I did not get one. Would not be fair to leave a puppy alone all day.

yes, unfortunately I do think it would be selfish to do to a puppy. Is there anyway you can get time off? Maybe wait until you have kids and are home to get a puppy?? Just a suggestion.
