I get the theory but do they work? I got a Cobra XRS 12 band thing as a present and wonder now if I can turn the NJ Tpke into the Autobahn.

Yes I have the same detector that you have and it works wonderfully! The best thing about it is that it is undetectable. Most radar detectors give off a buzz of sorts to the detector gun, if I'm making any sense, but this one does not. My biggest suggestion is that before you turn the turnpike into the Autobahn drive around normally first and get to know your detector and set the intellimute so that you know when it is a false signal and when it is a real one. Also this detector picks up laser signals and those are never a false alarm----slow down. And you get a flashing s if an emergency vehicle is coming. As you can tell I love mine...however construction zones sets it off and that is the most annoying thing ever. But after you get use to it is a real money saver...happy speeding!

Yes they actually work. Yes they are illegal in some states. Yes they can pick up other Radar signatures besides the ones police use and give 'false' signals (mainly from supermarkets. Don't know if the newer brands solved this problem, I haven't dealt with these things in over 10 years. I just tend to not speed, as it's safer for not only me and my family, but everyone else on the road. And I don't get tickets and have to pay out of my ... for them)

They work just fine.
Trouble is, most police now use instant on or laser speed detectors.

yes, they work for radars that are "turned on"
but, police use helicopters and math to figure your speed
(time * distance = SPEED)
on the NJT watch out for the cops on overpasses ...

They work well but in some jurisdictions are illegal and you can be fined or ticketed or worse for using them.
