This idea of the man providing for his family and being the "boss" of the family. This is really an excuse for the man to cheat..and not feel guilt for the reason that he is too manly not to cheat. Most Latino men will cheat or at least try. This is a very sexist philosophy...because the women will be basically kicked in the dirt and called a whore if she is unfaithful. This is a cultural idea is from ancient Europe. Why do the Latino people still cherish these ways and why do they think of that as being a good "family value" The illegals believe this to be a positive in any argument against them. Machismo in this country has a well deserved negative response. It is sexist and ignorant thinking.

Although I like a manly man, and I do defer to my husband in decisions, cheating is not the deed of a man, but of a sex starved immature little boy. REAL mean keep promises and are loyal. Machismo is found in many other cultures, not just Latino ones. I'd take a macho guy over a metrosexual guy anyday. My husband is hispanic and although he is the "boss" of the family, I have no issues with this. He is faithful, loyal, a good father, we work together on chores, and he treats me like a queen.

While yes machismo is highly cultural...its a very individual trait.

If you go to Utah, you see lots and lots of men and women practicing machismo ideals. One many with many wives is the ultimate machismo fantasy. But not all individuals in Utah do it.

If you go to Hollywood, you see lots of producers and directors being Macho. Not necesserily in the way they dress or even talk but in how they choose actors and actresses and how they treat them.

The problem though is that WOMEN (many times) are the ones who promot this!!!! They teach thier young baby boys and girls thier respective roles.

Believe me there are lot of other cultures that make the Latino culture look tame. There are Islamic countries where a female is considered property of the head male of the family , Also females are not allowed to go to school because their "job" is having kids.

As an attitude, machismo ranges from a personal sense of virility to a more extreme masculism. Many machistas also believe it is their right as men to seek extramarital adventures, although women are to remain faithful. Machistas believe that women were created to stay home and be mothers and wives. Thus, most machistas believe firmly in the superiority of men over women.
Great information,I will be waiting to read the answers you get.
The most common Spanish term for a woman with exaggerated feminine pride is feminista (as in "feminist"), although some Spanish speakers prefer the female equivalent of macho: hembra ("female" in Spanish), as in "Yo soy muy macho, pero tú eres muy hembra" (I am very macho, but you are very hembra). Today, both feminista and hembra are widely used in modern Spanish. In Hispanic cultures, women who display male-like characteristics or interests, are also identified. In English-speaking cultures, these women are typically called tomboys. In Mexico, the term used for this type of woman is mari-macha (i.e. both Maria and Macho).

I don't really think they do cherish machismo, at least not more than other cultures. [One girl dated a European guy--I won't say the culture because I don't want a bunch of replies from people in that culture. He treated her very nicely, and was more polite to her than American men. However, when it came down to it, he would not marry her because she'd been with other men, even though he'd been with other women.
Yes, there are still cultures today where men will oogle at women, but are very protective of their sisters. I don't know why

I don't believe sexism is unique to nor originated in Europe or with the Europeans. With that said, sexism is still very rampant in all cultures including white and American. It's a sad fact. It's subtler than before, and people are more tolerant than before, but it still exists. Just the sheer number of "anti-feminists" of both genders is enough to make someone wonder. They claim to not be against equality, but that's what feminism is. The belief in equality. It's all crazy. I do think some subcultures have it worse in some ways, like you said (ie Mexicans), but it's not unique to them. Many other subcultures have the same problem.

There you go picking on the Latinos again. Asian men, especially Vietnamese are the biggest male chauvinist machos towards their women that I've seen, tied with middle eastern men.

Well, it's my belief that 'machismo' is just another example of compensating for not being a real man who is sure of his manhood.

If you have to go around displaying it like a peacock, you ain't got it.

your absolutely right! i have a columbian friend who dates this ecuadorian guy and he's a complete *** hole, he's cheated on her and she takes him back, she's always wondering where he is, and if she goes out (shes' VERY faithful) he'll accuse her of cheating! if we're hanging out he'll call her to come cook for him and he knows how to cook! she speaks english so she has to find him jobs and do everything for him! and her cousin won't date hispanic guys because of those reasons, she only dates white guys because she says there more respectful of reason,
your absolutely right though, i've seen this first hand its horrible, and my friends Aunt hasn't let her husband touch her in 10 years because he cheated, what a great way to live huh?
