Because a company is providing it for you. You can get free alerts from real attacks on your radio and T.V. thru the U.S. emergency broadcast system.

Cellular phone minutes cost a lot, and the technology and maintenance on transmission equipment, staff, etc. cost a lot also. We're not talking about an emergency alert website. This company needs the equipment to store hundreds of thousands of phone numbers and the technology to accept commands for streaming audio, PLUS the sheer bandwith for streaming audio to a cell phone must cost thousands, if not millions, yearly.

I don't even think that this should be available because everyone would get their panties into a wad and there would be stupid panicky people running around like idiots. Some things just aren't meant to be.

Because it is operated by a private company that can not do it for free, but have to make money to pay its employees, and money to pay its bills.

It would make a lot more sense if it was free.So if you cant afford it you would be the last to know I guess .Only in America.Silly me maybe I will sign up for it ,just in case.:)
