I am going to college next year and am wondering about housing. I am considering joining a fraternity but my dad is concerned that fraternities are hedonistic and lead people away from Christ. Is that true?

For the most part, but not all. Check out Campus Crusade for Christ. It's neither , but it's good.

No they are not. Many fraternities and sororities have christian based principles. Many include prayer in all that they do and encourage involvement in worship services that you choose. And in many instances when an event takes place that involves Christ, the only thing that we do not do is be purposely offensive nor do we try to force others to believe what we believe. As a matter of fact many organizations require that you have high ethical and moral standards. Again many of the things that we volunteer in are b/c we wish to promote the spirit of unity, love and supporting each other (humanity as a whole), and those are all things that Christ would promote. Now are we on the same level as churches and religious organizations....No. But you are encouraged to be involved in a house of faith and are never discouraged from doing anything that you feel is right.

It depends on the fraternity, but more often than not, they are known for being groups who participate in "worldy" behaviors, particularly those things associated with partying; such a place would not be very comfortable for a believer who chooses to stand by his beliefs. You would be better off surrounding yourself with many other believers, especially since you will be away from support you have been used to. Try looking for a group of Christians on or near campus like "Campus Crusade for Christ," "Youth for Christ," "Campus Life," or "Navigators."

Find some Christian friends and then find a good church. Once you are on campus, it will be easier for you to see what the fraternities are like. You can look into joining one in the future if you find one that looks like it is made up of quality young men with values similar to yours.

Not all are bad. Look for a Christian sorority and don't become a little sister of a non-christian frat.

Most importantly, you need to quickly establish strong relationships with other firm believers, and make yourself accountable to someone who will keep you on track and speak into your life - Your dad is right that there are so many things at college to lead you away from Christ.

In a word yes! When some one is forced into accepting a value system that does not reflect their own Christain values and priorities; that is not of the Lord Jesus Christ!

No,it is not true because it depends on what he means un-christian. To say that you are easily influence and tempted to do wrong shows that ur father don't trust you not the group itself. He must trust you and ur decisions. He must allow you to step into adulthood.

Unless an entity is specifically self-described as Christian, it is un-Christian. And even then, they might not be telling the whole story...
