After excommunicating and imprisoning and threatening hellfire upon astronomers and scientists, the religious community finally accepted the idea that the Earth revolves around the sun. In a few thousand years they actually may accept that evolution is real, and the predecessors of humankind have been around for literally millions of years.

On any reasonably taxonomy humans are a species that has membership of the group of species called the "Great Apes". These are:
Humans
Chimpanzees
Gorillas
Orangutans
In fact not only are chimps our nearest relative: we are the chimps nearest relative. (A chimp is nearer to us than he is to a Gorilla).
