With lots of patience. My son has it and it is a constant struggle but we have found these to help.
1) routine.........a child with adhd does better with a routine and it will also make it easier on you
2)consistency..........just because today is a bad day for you and you are tired you have to keep the rules and punishment the same all the time, don't back down and waiver from it.
3) Our son sees a therappist and it is helping, they work with him on all sorts of issues and once a month we go in as a family to see what he has done and how we can help.
4) Karate is great. It teaches discipline and self control, many kids with adhd benefit from this and even team sports help as it teaches them sharing and team work plus lets them burn off energy
5) Work with his school and teachers. They have went through this before and can often give you very useful pointers. Just as the pediatrician can.
6) Develop a reward system for the good behavoir so he knows it is acknowledged
Last continue to monitor his diet but also know that some fruit juices as well are high in natural sugars and can be bad
Feel free to im me if you want to talk more.

I'm a childcare practitioner and have worked with alot of children who have ADHD.

I know it can be really hard sometimes but there are lots of people out there who are willing to help you.

Try speaking to your G.P or someone at your child's school or Nursery. Also if you can contact your local childrens information service they will be able to help you. Mencap are often a really helpful agency to contact and i know that some of the Mencap groups offer support workers and play sessions.

There are loads of websites with valauble information and places where you can share stories and talk to other parents in a similar situation

I wish you all the best

RE:

You don't! My brother had it... but that was before it was as well known as it is now so he wasnt offered med's etc.
Just make sure's you have plenty of activities / games for the child - and a wide range also, because they get bored real easy. Maybe something really active too would be good... tire them out a bit! But med's are available now... i've heard they are meant to be quite good too!

Children like routine, they need to feel safe, warm and wanted. When raising children, you put the ground work in from the beginning.Meals at regular times, bed at a set time, keep them stimulated. I despair when I see young children out with their Mothers, outside pubs at 11pm at night.None of our children had problems. You only find this problem in certain social/ economic groups. Pack a picnic and get out into the fields, show them the world around them. Teach them. They rely on you.

We started going to a family therapist to learn how to parent our ADHD son and for my son to learn how to listen. It is a very tough road. Good luck.
