You should never use a harness on a young puppy when you're trying to train him to walk. This puppy is just a baby - don't be getting a choke collar at this young age - buy a light-weight buckle collar.

To Begin with never-ever leave a choker on the dog. Even tho' I often train using a choker, it is permanently attached to the lead so that it can never be left on a dog.

About the only thing that a harness is good for is to put on a team of horses so they can pull things. I guess if you had a Newfie and you wanted to do some carting, or if you were going to run the Iditarod dog sled race a harness would be the thing to use.

For the normal dog under normal circomstances a flat buckle collar is the thing to use. You can get nice nylon collars in about every color of the rainbow.

Depending on the dog's needs, you can try several kinds of collars.

Choke chains and prong collars are NOT recommended for a dog this young.

Dogs that don't like having something around their necks, may do well with a head-style "halti" collar. This lets you guide the dog by the head rather than by the throat. Or you can try two different kinds of body harnesses. One type (full-body harness) encircles the chest and torso and lets you guide the dog from its back rather than its throat. Another style (the "gentle" harness) lets you guide the dog by the shoulders and the front of the chest.

If your dog doesn't mind having something around its neck we recommend the "martingale" collar. It provides you with some level of control while also being gentle on the dog's throat.

Check our www.drsfostersmith.com for the various types.

Choke collars should be used durring training only and only as a tool in training. They are not for eveyday wear.
I recommend either a nylon or leather collar (your choice) for every day use and a choke for training.
Harness spread out the weight and allow the dog to pull harder than with a collar so I do not use them unless the dog is training to pull weight or a sled.

Here is another option - a martingale. I love them. You can get them at petsmart. What it is - it is a nylon collar for the neck part but at the back, there is a chain. The chain is behind the head and allows a little give. She will not hurt herself on the nylon part and you will still have the sound of the chain in her ear to get her attention. Have the trainer there show you how to use it. (I used to be a trainer at petsmart) I love using those on my puppies as you can get good, GENTLE control over your dog.

a nylon one with a buckle like they use on backpacks instead of one like they use on leather belts will not come undone.

Choke collars are ok if you are teaching her how to walk on a lead but not the ones with the things that dig into her neck. Beagles will pull on a lead so you need to start teaching her young.

When she is older you can add a kerchief. My dog had a bunch of different ones for different seasons and holidays.

The chock collar is only on the dog when the dog is under your direct supervision and we never put dog tags on this type of collar. You should have a buckel collar on the dog with the tags on it. a body harness is usless to control the dog and promotes the dog to pull never use a harness unless you are teaching your dog to track.

I think chokers are usless and can accually hurt her neck! I would use a simple leather or nylon collar. Harnesses accually encourage dogs to pull on their leash. At this age she is old enought to start basic obedience and a normal collar is good!

definately a harness. she will be big enough for a regular collar in a few weeks, though. choker collars are really only good for intense training. not for everyday use. to keep her attention, always have treats in your pocket.
