It means the person wants to be your equal. They don't want to lead or to be led. They want to co-exist next to you and make decisions together.

"Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow; Don't walk behind me, I may not lead; Walk beside me, and just be my friend. "
~Albert Camus
This quote expresses Albert Camus' value of human life. Although he had many quotes he is mostly well known for this one.
I think the quote basically says, just be near me but without being someone superior and without being someone just there. To be there and to lend an ear and be understanding, as a friend.

It means you are obviously not going to be walking on any narrow mountain passes. You are also not going to get anywhere constructively. Two people have different sets of abilities and to know who has the lead ability at a given time and have the confidence to concede or to take the lead will produce better results in a challenge situation.

This is all about equality, as many here have said, but it also about respect in a friendship. The quote says, in effect, that I may not go along with everything you do or go everywhere you go, I'll respect your decisions to do these. Also, it is not necessary to follow me, as my path may not be yours, or you may not enjoy the journey I am on as much as I do. But no matter where, or what we do, separately or apart, our friendship will endure, and we will ever be there for each other.

The quote is by Albert Camus (1913-1960)
French novelist, essayist, and playwright
It means, I don't need anyone to show me they way, if you try to lead me, I might not follow you. I don't need anyone to stand behind me, knowing someone is always there to catch you when you fall may affect your ability to lead. Walk beside me, not leading, not following, and just be my friend. There for me when I need you to be.

It is a discourse on relationships and the importance of having a support system. Sometimes people want to have a trusted companion that they can rely on in times of need or in times of joy. When someone else is leading and you are in a position of following, or vice versa, there is a hierarchical structure that does not necessarily lend itself to equal reliance.

Larry, The Merchant and myself all agree that it means that we need to be nice to our fellow humans. If we all just tore ourselves open and let our inards spill all over the ground, you will realize that we all look the same...or maybe Larry meant that our souls are the same. Well, whatever. I'm sure He meant that we are all equal.
