Think about how you met him, did he try to pick you up (with a cheesy line that he thought was smooth) or did you just randomly meet? What's his past like? Tons of ex's? How does he act when there's another good looking girl around, does he check her out or try to catch her eye?

Usually if he trys too hard to be romantic (goes over board) or if he is inconsistent in his affection toward you. Too much sweet talking is also a sign: if he's like that with you, who else is he like that with? Did he speak that way when you first met him? If so, he probably does that to all the other ladies. That could be a hint.
