Churches do not help the poor!! Instead they frighten the poor into donating money needed for their children. And they spend the money on huge extravagant buildings.

On the other hand Bill Gates a well known atheist has spent billions fighting aids and helping the poor.

If you need a church to do good things for your fellow man... you're doing it for all the wrong reasons.

Next time you're walking to work, and you see a homeless guy... hand him your lunch and keep going, without a word, or nothing more than a 'here you go'. That's doing good.

Volunteering two hours in a soup kitchen with a Bible reading in the middle of the luncheon is using food to maneuver people so you can thump your Bible at them, and is evil.

Added:

And hey, since you're obviously out to bash, I'm gonna boast a bit. What do I do to help my fellow man? I'm a member of a 100% volunteer search and rescue team that was activated (though unfortunately, we did not have the opportunity to deploy) during 9/11 and Hurricanes Katrina & Rita. The biggest event I participated in was the Geyer Springs tornados on March 1, 1997 in Arkansas, before I was 18 years old, and I was grandfathered in by the group as the only and last minor as a member after that search in recognition of my activities during that search (we amended the bylaws to add an age limit -- I handled it well, most my age at the time would not have). In my capacity as a SAR K9 handler, I have participated in searches that helped solve murders and saved lives and brought criminals to justice. Many of the environments I worked in were potentially dangerous and/or hostile, including the threat of gunfire and structural collapse.

So... when was the last time *YOU* put the life of yourself and your closest life companion on the line for your fellow man?

yes, churches do some humanitarian things., But why do you think atheists don't? They are compelled to do things like help the poor and needy too, the only difference is they are compelled by thie own concious and morals, not a book.

Work in hospitals, volunteer for and donate to non-sectarian charities like Second Harvest, volunteer at a non-sectarian group that helps new immigrants get on their feet (my favorite atheist does that), donate gently-used clothes to Goodwill...

Wonder how those people became disenfranchized in the first place, and help people directly. Myself. My friends. Children.

I see more being done by community programs than by churches.
