Whether using masking tape for home decorating, or for masking the borders when painting a picture you should always (very carefully) remove the tape whilst the paint is still wet(unless, in picture painting you are using water colour): as the paint dries it begins to bind together, so forming one surface skin, once this has formed it is practically impossible to break that skin other than with a knife, so as you peel the tape away, the paint that's on the surface of the tape will, if dry, have bonded with that on the surface that you are trying to protect and will pull it away with it.
One other problem could be caused (if it is paint that's already completely dry when you put the tape on) could be that you need to use 'low contact' masking tape as the normal strength stuff can easily pull quite well 'set' paint off.

First of all, you have not said wether or not the paint on the ceiling is fresh paint or old paint. If the paint on the ceiling was there previous to your painting the walls, it could be that it is latex paint, painted over old oil based paint. The masking tape will take off the paint every time. As in previous answers you have received, the type of tape that you use is crucial. For fresh paint that is dry to the touch, I would suggest using the 3M purple tape or The white tape called Kleen Edge/Easy Mask for wet paint. Or Scotch brand 3M white Safe-Release tape. Regular masking tape (beige) is something I never use for painting.
As far as repairing your ceiling...you can dab a sponge in the paint that matches your ceiling paint and apply it that way. It won't look right at first, but, when it dries it will be just fine. Good luck with your project!

Yes the blue tape is great, it peels right off the surface it is stuck to, however the peeling is due to the paint on top of the tape. When you remove the tape the new paint comes with it, low tack tape will not help, it prevents damage to the surfaces below. Either score the paint with a razor after it dries or peel it while wet.

Yes.. that is what masking tape does.. That is why I always use a BLUE painters tape(a type of masking tape but for painters use).. It is G R E A T

Previously when I used regular masking t ape.. I would put it on.. then paint and almost immediately, remove the tape.. BUT it is not nearly as good for painting as the BLUE painter's masking tape.

If you need to tape the surface up use low tack masking tape, available at all diy stores. Peel off as soon as you have finished painting.

I would never use masking tape on emulsioned surface it is bound to peal away the paint. You just need a steady hand when painting the wall, and remember, people are not tall enough to study the fine detail.

Use a low adhesive masking tape.
peel of the tape as soon as the painted side has started to dry, in a direction of the painted side.

To properly paint any surface it must first be prepared so that it might except the paint. This may mean wiping down with a mild solution, scraping, or even sanding depending on the condition of the existing paint. 3M has also recently come out with a specialized painters tape... it's green and it works really well.

There are two brands of tape made specifically for painting, 3M and Duck brand. The Blue tape is good and sticks better, but the purple is less likely to peel off the paint. Recently, have been repainting my whole house so have had lots of experience with both. Walmart, Loews, Home Depot all carry it.

After applying thousands of gallons of paint, and hundreds or more feet of tape, I'll offer this.

Number one,,, The tape isn't a license to be sloppy.

Use BLUE painters tape, remove before the paint is totally dry and DO NOT start at one end and pull,,,work the tape up to the paint line and pull gently away
