Yes, some charge way to much, I know for a fact they charge you a arm and a leg for products and they purchase them dirt cheap from a beauty supplier.

Here we go again with the generalizations....How can you say that all of anything is a ripoff?? I have been a Managing Cosmetologist for over 15 yrs and I have never ripped anyone off. I have gone above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that my clients are happy with whatever service I performed. I have always made sure to go to every new class that I can for continuing education, so that my clients get all the new techniques, products and services available. I have squeezed in, I can't tell you how many people who just had to get in, at that very moment. I have gone without lunch or even a bathroom break, more times than not. I have worked every weekend and holiday, came in early and stayed late, week after week. I have listened to more troubles than your psychiatrist, and stroked more egos than I care to count. I could go on and on. I am sure there are some Cosmetologists out there who don't do an outstanding job and charge too much for subpar service. But I can tell you, that I know a lot of very hard working people that work in full service salons, that do a wonderful job of keeping their clients happy and coming back, year after year. And we certainly aren't getting rich doing it! As far as retail prices go, how much do you think other stores pay for the products they sell? Example~ soda costs pennies, yet you pay up the nose for it. Salons don't mark up any higher than any other store you purchase items from. Needless to say, if you are paying for something that you are not satisfied with, that's on you.

I am a hairdresser also and i have NEVER ripped anyone off. Usually prices run by area and length of hair. IF the hairdresser does not do your hair right, tell her! I have done that before and had it fixed! It is your hair and your money, remember that....

No we are not. We are licensed professionals by the state we work in. I'm a hair dresser licensed in two states. We are highly trained in beauty school about hair and learn more as we work. We also have to take continuing education classes. Each client has different hair and each responds differently to different products. We do out best to use the best products on our clients. You are a walking representative of our work and I always want to do the best job. If a cut or hair color is not to your liking, go back to the salon and ask politely to have it re-cut. I just did. The service will be free. It takes a stylist a long time to get to know someones hair, cowlicks, how it falls, what the client likes. It's very hard to get the perfect cut the first time. It takes a while to get the know the hair texture and what works the best. After a few cuts you know how the hair will react. Go to a high end salon, the hair dressers there have been working and training for a very long time. They take pride in their work. I know I do.

The whole idea of hair salons seems to be senseless. My wife has never darkened the doorway of such a place, has beautiful long hair below her waist and maintains it herself. every time we get near a hair salon they want to cut her hair. I figure that if they cut her hair they have a client for life, because then the maintenance begins, cutting, styling, frizzing, dying, bleaching, etc. All at a significant charge. She says that she would rather have the 500 dollar shoes and the 1500 dollar hand bags than to support a "habit" at the hair dressers.

I am a hairdresser, and I suppose to some people they are, but not all. I don't go to one myself, and I don't cut my hair enough!!!!!
I do believe if you frequently change your hair color you need to use professional products, but if you're going to stick to one color forever then go to the drug store!
Also, a lot of people don't just go to get their hair done. They go for someone to talk to, and someone to tell them they look beautiful! $20 or $30 isn't much to spend for advice and a boost of confidence once a month!!

Only if they do a crappy job! And often times they do! If you can find one you are happy with and stick with them then no they are not a rip off. I am more than happy to pay for quality work!

I finally woke up and realized it. I purchased the same products at the beauty supply outlets and did what they do myself. I have saved a lot of time, money and gas.
