Because they realized it was Jesus' destiny to die for their sins. He had been hinting at that for a while and there supposedly are several passages in the bible pre-dating Jesus that prophesize the crucifixion. Apparently the Christian God is a blood thirsty God who needs something to cut and bleed before he can forgive or grant any special favors.

Have you read the Scriptures at all? Jesus told them that this was to happen as He is the Messiah
