Augmentin is an antibiotic, similar to penicillin, but with an extra bit designed to combat some of the penicillin-resistant germs.

It can be prescribed for infections pretty much anywhere in the body. It is not useful against viral illnesses.

Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) is in the penicillin family. Augmentin, Augmentin ES-600, and Augmentin XR are all used to treat recurrent or persistant acute otitis media caused by Strep pneumoniae, H. influenza or Moraxella catarrhalis in patients exposed to antibiotic use within the last 3 months or who are 2 years old or younger or in a day-care faciltity. For lower respiratory tract infection, otitis media, sinusitis, skin and skin structure infection and UTIs caused by susceptible strains of gram-positive and gram-negative organisms. Also for community-acquired pneumonia or acute bacterial sinusitis caused by H. influenza, M. catarrhalis, H. parainfluenzae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, MRSA and S. pneumoniae with reduced susceptibility to penicillin.

The benefits of Augmentin are rather obvious, don't you think?

Someone mentioned "Amoxium". There's no such med. If they meant amoxicillin, this is not quite the same thing as Augmentin, which is amoxicillin plus clavulanate potassium.
