I am a RSW and it is never to early to get your child involved in helping others. Packaging hampers is a great way to start. A four year old can put things in bags.

There is soooo much need out there. Do not wait till your child is any older. We started volunteering with our daughter when she was 2 (she's 18 now and is REALLY into doing all that she can for everyone in need). We started with Presents for Patients and called a local nursing home to visit and give gifts to patients without visitors. The people LOVED having a young child around. We have also passed out blankets, etc. to homeless people in our city and I have 1 other GREAT idea. I currently work at our local Ronald McDonald House (a home away from home for families with children who are in the hosital or out and recovering).A lot of people in the community do really cool things for our young patients like donate all their kids birthday or Christmas presents to our kids, etc. You can do that or do the same for homeless kids in your area, etc. You sound like a great person and your son will grow up being a good person too because he will see others from a young age who have less then he does and grow up more willing to continue helping others. The world needs more people like you. God Bless You and P.S. Become an Organ Donor if you're not already-the need is tremendous as is the need for potential Bone Marrow Donors.

Good for you! I think that having your four-year old included in the volunteering is terrific.
I can't offer specific suggestions, but I can give a caution to always ask before taking your child on a volunteer job with you. I went to a clean-up day at a children's shelter with friends and MY four-year old, and was surprised that their insurance wouldn't allow her to stay.
Get on the phone and make some calls to local charitible organizations and find out what opportunities are available for your family.
Have fun (and enjoy the time off)!

Delivering meals-on-wheels together (they often need drivers, even short-term), serving meals at a community kitchen, volunteering at a nursing home (children can help with games and activities, setting tables, delivering items to rooms, etc) are all kid-friendly experiences.
