Probably out of curiosity and to see if anything abnormal is on the tissue. I do this only when sick. I check sputums and aspirations of my patients as well. It's a way to monitor the disease process.

I would imagine it is a learned response. Mom and/or dad did it, so we do. This may have come about as a belief that nasal mucous is an health indicator. Blood, yellowish color or other abnormalities could indicate bad health, especially in european culture that believed phlegm was an excellent indicator of health.

Could be habit, you see your parents do it so you do it to. Now the real reason you should look is to see if there could be signs of infection or blood. Or maybe some forein object.

To make see what we created. Its like "Dude look at the size of this goober here!" It give us a sense of accompishment. For males in facct it is one of the closest ways we will ever be able to give birth to something.
