The dogs' "period" is referred to as a "heat" (or alternatively the dog is said to be "in season").
Dogs can have their first heat at 6 months. Usually a heat lasts 14-18 days.
Heat cycles usually come every 6 months, but some dogs can have "split cycles" spaced 3 months apart.
While in heat the dog's vulva will swell and there could be light to moderate bloody discharge.
Be careful when your dog is in heat to keep her in a secure area. Male dogs can literally smell a female in heat over several MILES; and females in heat often become "escape artists" in their attempts to get to the males.
Whenever possible spay/neuter your pets to help prolong their life and protect them from various kinds of cancer.

Unless you are planning on breeding her, I would suggest getting her spayed. It will prevent behavior problems, and prevent many different kinds of cancer. But since that's not what you asked.... Her period should last for less then a week and then she is in heat. During this time she must be kept from all male dogs(in tact), to prevent her from getting pregnant. since this is her first cycle, I recommend that if you are planning on breeding her, you at least wait until she's a little older. There are puppy sanitary napkins you can get from petco. i have a toy poodle, and find that many things from there won't fit my dog because he is so small...so you might need to visit a place for especially small dogs. Good luck! enjoy your princess.

Most females start between the ages of 3 and 6 months then they have it every 6 months after that. It usually lasts 21 days, 7 days coming in (where they start swelling) 7 days in (bleed, some more than others) and 7 days going out (swelling subsides and bleeding stops). Although it can vary in all females much like women can vary.

probability is she already has had her first warmth and no one observed; some women human beings are stable at protecting themselves sparkling, and her coat ought to conceal the swollen vulva. If she's with a male, she will have domestic canines. that's no longer a stable determination for a female below 2 years old. Take her to the vet, get her examined and examined. Any purebred desires papers and pedigree, exams to sparkling for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, for little canines like toy poodles, luxating patellas, CERF accreditation and a stylish certificates. She must be examined for those themes maximum regular in poodles: * Addison's * continual energetic Hepatitis * Cushings * Epilepsy * Hypothyroidism * Legg-Calve-Perthes * Sebaceous Adenitis (SA) * Von Willebrand's ailment (vWD) The male must be further examined. the two canines must be shown in conformation to tutor that they greater healthful interior the familiar for a toy poodle, and that they could desire to compete in one or greater overall performance activities: obedience, rally, agility, scientific care... something that demonstrates that they are the two accurately, for poodles, clever, trainable and psychologically stable. in user-friendly terms then ought to the vendors evaluate breeding the pair,

Dogs have heat cycles not periods.
She will start having a heat cycle about 6 months to one year and she will have one about every six months or so. That is average. Some dogs go nine months or more in between the heats.
She willl be in heat for three weeks and it will happen about every six months.
If you do not intend to breed this dog have her spayed as every heat cycle she has increases her risk of mamary cancer and a pyometra (uterine infection) and they can be deadly if not caught in time.

tlctreecare is correct, but I would like to add that dogs have heat cycles forever . They do not have the equivalent to of a female's menopause stage" and can breed until they pass to to the Rainbow Bridge. It's best, not to mention healthier, to have your dog spayed.
