The WORS (winsconsin off road series) race in my home town is coming up that I have been preparing a year and a half for. Last year I raced and got 11th place. Since then I bought a new bike (Schwinn Rockett88) and have been riding more and training harder to get better results in this years race. BUT......... the race falls on the same weekend of a festival that I have been going to for years with my friends. The festival is a blast, we camp out in the woods on 4wheeler trails and ride 4wheelers and drink beer all weekend. Which leaves me with a big decision to make.
Should I try to make it to the race on suday morning at 10am, possibly hungover and the race is about an hour from where we are camping OR skip the race alltogether and ride 4wheelers for another whole day and have lots of fun?

Friends are for life, glory is forever.
Theres always next year. And nobody will see you coming.
Take this year off and train even harder for next year. I'll bet u see better than 11th place.
Just a thought.

There's no reason you can't do both. If you can handle drinking in moderation and stop early in the evening then have a few beers and go 4wheeling with your buddies. Head to bed early and explain to your friends why your doing it so they don't give you any grief over it. Beer is great but shouldn't be needed in large amounts to really enjoy the weekend with your friends.
Get yourself up a couple of hours early the next morning and rehydrate yourself on the way over to the race, try and get to the race location a good 30-40 minutes before the race so you can get a light warm up in to work any lingering alcohol out of your system.

I would advise you to go for the race. There is always a next year to celebrate with friends. And that is not the last time you are going to be with your friends. You will always have other times. However with the race, you may never tell how fit you will be by that time next year. you do not know whether you will even be away(moved or gone to college etc.). Furthermore, the friends won't be angry with you for going to the race and forfeiting the festival but will congratulate you if you do well on the race. You have been going to the festival with friends for years, skipping one year will do no harm at all. That is my opinion. But again, take all advices and weigh them and make the decision yourself. Peace.

Do both.
You've been training for this ride for a year so it seems silly not to race.
Do the campout in moderation. You can still have fun without drinking. Ride the 4wheeler a little less than normal.
Then next year pray both don't fall on the same weekend.

Well, I would go to the race and skip the weekend with the boys all together. If I trained as long and hard as it seems you have, then I'm not going to waste it by riding around on 4 wheelers. You could do that any weekend. It's up to you. Why let all that training go to waste.

I have a similiar situation, go to a free concert by Jackyl this weekend or race a triathlon. I have chosen the triathlon because of all the work I put into it this summer. Obviously, if you have been training so much, it means something to you. Your friends will always be there for you. Race, and party with them next weekend at a bar to make up for it.

If you are riding with a team, don't do your team an injustice by partying the night before. I swear, I wanted to kick the $hit out of this one guy on my team time trial that was hungover. It was a 5 man team and the race time counted on the last guy over the line. All of us except boozer were crisp, powerful, and pulled hard. We even let boozer draft at the back the entire time. But he fell off halfway through. It pissed me off so much. I wanted to punch the SOB. We had to basically leisurely pedal to keep him with us. After all the other teams passed us, I said "Phuck it!" And the rest of us 4 just pulled away and hammered just for our own sanity. Boozer never finished. Although, he was finished from our team after that. I suggest you learn from this lesson.

If you have been preparing and training super hard for the race you should go to it. If you dont you will probobly regret it. If they are your true friends they will understand and support you 100%
