That first answer you got is inaccurate and misleading. Nursing salaries vary across the country. All salaries in Tennessee tend to be lower than those of, say, California, because the cost of living is also lower in TN than in CA. It's all relative. CA, WA, HI, OR & AL tend to pay higher with AL in the lead (most likely to attract nurses to that Godforsaken place). But then it costs an arm & a leg to live in these places, too. RNs can make up to and over $90,000. And in CA, even CNAs can make a fairly decent wage. The trade journal, Nursing 2006 did a national survey last year on salaries. You could investigate that for some good information.

As an LPN in Florida with over 30 years experience - I make $17.00 /hr. I consider this low pay for my knowledge and experience. And this pay rate is working through an agency. I could make more if I were willing to do agency work in hospitals and nursing homes, and I have done that... but it jeopardizes my license and since I need my license to work, I can't afford to lose it. My agency doesn't even pay for holidays.

They are the volunteer state. The pay rate is on the scale of regions in which are harder to inhabit. If you go to an impoverished area the rate of pay is higher.
