If a British Citizen marries an Iranian in Iran the marriage isn't recognized by the UK government. Is the same true for the US?

The marriage is accepted (with a certified marriage certificate, not license) for matters such as changing your name, changing your identity in general. If you need to immigrate your spouse, the process is a little longer and more complicated, involving interviews and paperwork and proof of financial capability.

As long as the marriage is not against public policy(i.e- gay marriage is not recognized). Also, there must be a reason your marriage was not recognized. Marriage fraud? Is one of you too young to consent? There could be many reasons why, and it is possible, depending on your situation, that the U.S will not recognize your marriage either.

no. we accept marriages in other countries as long as they are not same-sex, and you have a marriage certificate (you may need a translated copy)
