according to the New Advent Catholic Encyclopedia, is "the Bishop of Rome, who, in virtue of his position as successor of St. Peter, is the chief pastor of the whole Church, the Vicar of Christ upon earth."
While the Pope may not draw a formal salary, we are fairly certain the benefits and honor of such a position make up for the lack of paydays. And he does get to live in the Vatican Palace.

The Pope has what he comes into the office with. The rest is the property of The Vatican. Why is it that people are so concerned with what the Pope has. He is responsible for giving out more in the way of charity then anyone else. His gifts no one will ever clearly realize until the end of time when all will become known. Regardless--even if he was making a mint "The worker is worth his wage" and "Why are you concerned because I am generous?"

As a christian monk of the order of dominicus, the pope is payment is in the preaching of the word and his duties as a clergyman. But, historically, the pope has been very wealthy. The pope used to control much of italy, especially in the north. (medeival age). And the pope has one of the wealthies private collections of art ,writings, etc. Although after the medici pope's the church made it unrighteous for clergyman to pass on wealth to their families, thus all wealth now belongs to the church. One of the primary reasons for the celibacy law being inacted.
Also, the church has retained alot of real estate over the years. Consequently, between their holdings and the donations to them the pontiff and the other high level clergyman, are allowed a living while they continue the work of "christ".
But, bluntly, he gets paid.

The Pope lives like a king, why would he need a salary? Why pour more undeserved wealth upon the poor fool when people are starving and dying for lack of money? Why does he not set the example and live in poverty?
